Medieval Palace - Tower of London, UK

Lighting design by Michael Grubb Studio

Michael Grubb Studio specified Radiant’s D 100 WE System IP20 projectors to provide dynamic, DMX-controlled, lit effects in the fireplaces of the Medieval Palace at the Tower of London.

The powerful but compact D 100 WE projectors are concealed within the fireplaces and produce an impressive fiery effect with an array of red, amber, and warm-white CCT LEDs, animated with a custom dynamic DMX-controlled dimming-sequence, coupled with a textured ‘pebble’ glass optic.

Each luminaire can be run at up to 10 Watts, providing up to 650 lumens, depending on the mix of LED colours and colour temperatures and the textured glass used. The lumen output varies during the dimming sequences.

A new permanent exhibition at The Medieval Palace at the Tower of London opened in May 2025 with a hugely successful lighting design scheme by Michael Grubb Studio.

The Palace interior showcases decorations and furniture from when it was the royal residence of Henry III and Edward I. The lighting scheme is immersive and atmospheric, and our dynamic Effect Lighting System adds to the sense of recreating a real lived-in domestic interior space.

All of the Radiant Effect Lighting Systems use Dynamic Effect technology, where decorative, dynamic lit effects are achieved using a combination of an LED matrix of various colour temperatures and colours, complex DMX controlled dimming sequences, and textured glass panel optics.

The system does not rely on any motors or moving parts and the LEDs are run below full power for some of the dimming sequence, giving a long working life of up to 100,000 hours. Contact Radiant for case study.
